ETLS eagles team leadership summit
ETLS Series 1 - Setting the Pace, Running the Race NEW
SEPTEMBER 3-4, 2009, Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia
Impacting An Indigenous Church
"We would like to invite the Eagles to come to Sabah and help train our SIB (Sidang Injil Borneo or the Evangelical Church of Borneo) pastors and leaders," was what prompted the recent Eagles Team Leadership Summit (ETLS) in Kota Kinabalu. That invitation came from Pastor Jerry Dusing, President of SIB Sabah and his top leaders when they visited Eagles in Singapore in April 2009. Six months later, over 280 pastors and church leaders were trained and equipped at the summit held from September 3-4, 2009.
SIB is the indigenous church in Sabah, East Malaysia with over 1,000 churches in the urban centers as well as in the Interiors. The leadership of the denomination has been keenly aware of the need for leadership training for all the pastors and they are in the process of developing and building their School of Leadership, alongside their School of Theology and School of Ministry. It is indeed a privilege and honor for Eagles to be a part of this initiative.
The Team from Eagles comprising speakers Peter Chao, John Ng, Michael Tan with support staff Billy Chan and Patrick Tan also included Elcid Basri, an Indonesian participant in our Eagles Emerging Leader Development (ELDP) program. His superb skills in interpreting our presentations from English to Bahasa Malaysia helped the delegates to understand and appreciate the teaching as over 60% of them were only conversant in Bahasa Malaysia.
"Even though the leaders came from a wide spectrum of educational backgrounds and experiences, the conference opened their minds to other perspectives on leadership as taught by the Eagles," Pastor Jerry Dusing commented.
"Many pastors I spoke to said that they had learned many things from the speakers. I have also benefited from the teaching at the same time as I was interpreting!" Elcid remarked.
We are poised for an impactful involvement with God's people in the beautiful country of Sabah.
ETLS Series 2 - The Future of Leadership
MAY 1-2, 2009, Penang, Malaysia
Over 130 pastors and lay leaders congregated at the Charismatic Church of Penang on May 1 & 2 to attend the Eagles Team Leadership Summit 2 (ETLS 2) entitled, The Future of Leadership. (ETLS 1 was conducted in April 2008.)
Organized by Edmund Chan and Lee Kah Hong, key leaders of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship in the North of Peninsula Malaysia, the participants went away with insights and principles on building trust, priorities, team work, managing change and transitions, and leading the church into the future.
This event also featured Dr Lim Peng Soon as the fourth member in the teaching team along with Peter Chao, Dr John Ng and Michael Tan. Many found the sessions to be very engaging with various pertinent questions fielded during the leadership dialogue session.
Here are some comments:
"This conference reinforces the importance of the clarity of purpose, vision and strategy. I have learnt many practical tips."
Kang Shing Lee, Penang Christian Centre
"To be a leader is to love God and build trust among the team as well as to cultivate balance between ministry and family. Everything we do is sacred; nothing is secular."
Richard Khoo, Bayan Baru Methodist Church
"The conference has helped me to realize and understand the transition and changes that I need to go through in the next few months. It has helped me to know the importance of trust in managing my organization. The topics were relevant and practical for me."
Chin Hsien Hui, Excel Point Community Church
On Sunday, May 3, Peter, John and Michael also had the opportunity to minister at three local churches.
Additionally, Viknesh Kobinathan and Suraj Upadhiah, interns with Eagles, also joined this mission, and were exposed to the work amongst the urban poor in Penang under the ministry of the House of Hope. This community church has been reaching more than 300 of the poorest families (about 2000 people in total) in the city over the last three years. A community church has been established in that district that has over 80-100 of these urban poor coming to the faith! It was indeed an eye-opening experience for our two youth leaders.
The organizers have extended an invitation to us to conduct ETLS 3 in 2010.
