"The extraordinary leadership by the Eagles staff at our Elders' Retreat was one of the most stimulating, refreshing, and helpful experiences of incredible spiritual, educational and emotional depth our elders have enjoyed. In America, there are many excellent training teams. The Eagles team stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of them!"

ELDPLeadership Coaching
The class of 2008 gathered for their fourth retreat in Bali to consider the theme "Coaching, Community & Succession Planning". This community of emerging leaders was inspired by the teaching sessions from the faculty and especially from the sharing with one other about their leadership journeys. Peter Chao led the retreat by helping the leaders to meditate on their role using the "Estuary" metaphor to synergize the effort of the younger and older leaders. Sam Lam provided a useful tool kit for the leader's role as a coach which most found very useful in their understanding as a coach. This retreat has enlarged their horizons and helped the leaders to be more effective both in church and marketplace. The Class of 2008 is looking forward to their last retreat and graduation this next October.

Magdalene Wee from Faith Methodist Church had this to say, "Lessons learned from Peter Chao provided great perspectives for me in this retreat. Understanding that Leadership is not a "one-size-fits-all" helps me to lead and handle issues in my ministry differently. I will also take back and share with my team about Coaching and what Success Planning looks like. There are loads for me to mentally reflect and run through again when I'm home. Thank you, it has been invaluable."

ELDPHeart, Soul and Mind
The second class of emerging leaders in the ELDP program met for their third retreat on the theme of Heart, Soul and Mind. Peter Chao conducted a series of four messages on the life of Joseph highlighting some of the moral and ethical dilemmas that the patriach faced in his journey as an emerging leader in Egypt. Other issues such as the emotional health of the leader, derailment factors and effective thinking processes were taught by faculty members John Ng, Sam Lam, and Michael Tan. The retreat also featured Paul McGee who did a one-day session on his S.U.M.O (Shut Up Move On) principles for responding positively to adversity.

"The retreat made me reflect on my life thus far and I'm already seeing God work in me - in heart, mind and soul", Wang Chang Yuin from Singapore remarked. Susan Koh who accompanied her husband for the first time at such a retreat said, "ELDP is committed to train leaders for the future. This retreat has made available invaluable material for leadership development in an excellent environment with engaging dialogues and lectures."

ELDPChange, Conflict, and Church Politics
ELDP, a 3-year training program designed to nurture emerging leaders, is comprised of five retreats held every six months. The third class had its second retreat on the beautiful island of Bali from March 26 to 30, 2008.

The first morning saw a happy reunion of participants after six months apart. Peter Chao kick-started the program with an inspirational session on "Leading in Uncharted Waters", where participants were challenged to explore "Blue Ocean" strategies - to reach untapped markets, and meet unmet needs.

The key to successful Change Management was shared by Lim Peng Soon. Herein lies the answer - to focus on Managing the Transition. While "change" is the external event, "transition" is the internal psychological reorientation a person goes through. Constant two way communication on both real and perceived transitionary concerns, cannot be over-emphasized!

Michael Tan intoxicated us with lessons on "Organizational Politics and Toxic Leadership". Truth be told, everyone is involved in politics. The differentiating factor is how leaders are to practice good politics and lead from the heart.

An animated series of teachings on "Conflict and Peacemaking" was delivered by John Ng. We are, first and foremost, to be peacemakers like our Lord Jesus. To come out of conflicts a stronger person, we should endeavor to align interests and invest on strengthening relationships.

The program ended with a heart-changing sharing by Peter Chao, whose key exhortation was, "Cultivate a generous spirit by being a Forgiving Leader". To forgive is to help ourselves by removing the poison from our hearts - how wise are the commands of our loving Father.

Indeed, the Eagles 4-P Leadership Model, which hinges on the importance of the leader being a God-centered Person resonated throughout the entire 3.5 day program. Only with God can we achieve such a great calling.

With over 13 communal meals and many group presentations, great fun and bonding was certainly not lacking.

Comments from participants:

"I will share what I have learned with my leadership team. I realized how important leaders have to live by our vision passionately." Budianto, AbbaLove Ministries, Jakarta, Indonesia

"I have learned what it means to be a God-centered person in daily life. And to understand myself and accept others as they are. And put time and effort to cultivate self-leadership." Pun, Mahapawn Church, Bangkok, Thailand

"I have to pay the price for the mental, emotional and spiritual preparation for the leadership marathon ahead as I refocus on God who remolds my character, rekindles my calling and retools my competency for high-octane leadership performance." Jun, Holy Church of Yahweh, Manila, Philippines

"The 'Change, Conflict & Church Politics' retreat is even better. Better because the relationship between participants as well as that with the faculty is further developed. The learning in such a redemptive community is enriching."
Tan Poh Kiang, Singapore

"The ELDP retreats always engage mind, heart and spirit when dealing with complex challenges of leading in the modern world."
Jesse Price, China

"It brings about a new paradigm on change management and conflict resolution while remaining faithful to biblical principles."

Meng Wai, Malaysia

"This retreat is the treasure for all leaders."
Satanun Boonyakiat, Thailand

"The ELDP is amazing! In just two retreats, I have learnt a phenomenal amount of what is immediately applicable knowledge."
Chiang Ming Shun, Singapore

As I read these responses, the faculty and I feel humbled and grateful for the way God has used us, feeble vessels to touch lives in such a deep way. Praise be to God!

The faculty comes from a range of different disciplines but share a common passion. Dr Lim Peng Soon, who had recently obtained his doctoral degree in change management, leads the group in the process of managing transitions: the human side of change.

Rev Wong Kim Kong, General Secretary of National Evangelical Christian Fellowship, enthralls the participants with his wealth of leadership and church experiences on how to prevent, manage and recover from conflict.

Our very own Michael Tan, in his usual animated and colorful way, shares most candidly about good and bad politics as well as toxic leaders and toxic followers.

Finally, in using the imagery of the compass, Peter Chao challengs the leaders to lead in uncharted waters by thinking outside the box and adopting a "blue ocean" strategy, just like the apostles in Acts.

For me, it is a joy to see how the participants interact intimately, share candidly, and pray personally. I see too the commitment of the faculty members, who give their time most generously and openly to each participant. They spend quality time one-on-one to meet with their mentorees and in small groups to listen.

Most of all, God is with us, listening to every conversation, encouraging each heart, comforting every broken spirit, and pushing each one to go beyond themselves.

What is most encouraging is that every participant and faculty recognizes that each retreat is but another milestone in their leadership journey. Now, comes the hardest part - the practice of leadership in real life situations.

As such, I urge you to pray - pray that God will continue to make a difference in their lives and through their lives.
- John Ng, Chairman of ELI
